Why Should I Unhook My Hose During Winter?
When the colder months approach, its important to perform winterizing maintenance around the exterior of your home in order to avoid any cold weather mishaps. Were asked often about the importance of unhooking your outside hose during the colder monthswhy is it important, anyway?
Its a pretty simple answer, really! When youre finished running your hose and turn the knob (spigot) off theres still water trapped in a good portion of the long hose. Theres also water at the base of the spigot in anticipation of the next use. During the colder temperatures, this water can freeze, causing the water in the pipes to crack.
The crack usually occurs behind where the washer is, which is on the inside of the house. Once you turn on the hose, the water proceeds to where the crack is (on the inside of your home), pouring water into the house. By removing the hoses, there is no water that is able to enter into the pipes.
