Most HVAC owners know the importance of energy efficiency. SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is the ratio of the cooling output of an air conditioner. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the air conditioner is. However, more efficient air conditioners come at a cost. The difference from one SEER rating to the next SEER rating, could be between a 15 and 20% price increase. Soon, the next highest SEER rating will no longer be an optional choice. For air conditioners and heat pumps, minimum efficiencies will be increasing in 2023.
New Minimum Efficiency Standards Will Cause Price Increase Come 2023
In an attempt to reduce energy consumption in the United States, the Department of Energy will have a minimum efficiency standard for all new air conditioners getting sold in 2023. Currently, the minimum efficiency that can be sold is 13 SEER. But in 2023, the new minimum will be 14 SEER. You will no longer be able to buy a minimum 13 SEER, meaning all new air conditioner buys will have to buy at least 14 SEER. And if you’re interested in air conditioning at a lower cost, then now is the time to buy!
